You should have heard of the famous King Henry VIII of England, who had six wives, former defender of the Catholic faith and eventually the one who turned his back to the Church after marrying Anne Boleyn.

  • Catholicism was flourishing during his time, when Martin Luther bagged 95 theses and decided to turn his back in the Church
  • In 1521, he was awarded by Pope Leo X the title “Defender of the Faith”, opposing the reformed ideas of Martin Luther.
  • He had his first mistress, Mary Boleyn, for only a short period of time and came Anne Boleyn, sister of Mary, and the first mistress he married.
  • He soon after broke with Rome in 1530 and established himself as the head of the Church of England, though many were against it, some rebelled members of the Church tolerated him.

  • He had his only child with his wife then, Catherine of Aragon, named Mary – who happens to be the first reigning Queen of England, Mary I, at the time when Anglicanism was already active.
  • Mary I was considered a bastard or illegitimate child of Henry when she was still young, who led her to hate all those who turned their backs into Catholicism.
