First Oral Argument: No Marcos Burial, End National Tragedy

The anti-Marcos burial groups aired their sentiments against the planned rites for the former dictator, late President Ferdinand Marcos, saying it could end national tragedy.

National tragedy, as the Anti- Marcos burial would call the entire two-decade regime and its effect, could be ended by not allowing the late President Ferdinand Marcos’ corpse laid at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB).

They claim that pursuing the burial of former President Marcos at the Heroes’ Cemetery is like honoring the late strongman for being a dictator and putting the entire Philippines under Martial Law.

As the oral arguments opened on the morning of Wednesday, August 31, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said that Marcos was a cruel leader and an oppressor of the Filipino people during the Martial Law regime.

Lagman stood before the Supreme Court en banc to represent the families of the individuals who were critical of the Marcos government and disappeared, believed to be tortured to death.

The Albay congressman urged the high court to put an end to what he called a ‘national tragedy’ through disapproval of Marcos burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Lagman claimed that there were 10,000 cases of human rights violations under the Martial Law regime.
