Most Talked About: 15.2 Million Facebook Users Discuss Election Since November 2015

Election related topics including candidates and several issues emerged as hottest topic since November 2015 with 15.2 million Filipino Facebook users around the world engaged in the online phenomenon based upon the report released by Ogilvy Public Relations Manila.

The report noted that the election related topics has generated 124 million interactions on the world’s largest social networking site. Filipino women aged 18 to 24 years old are among who ruled in every election discussion.

Out of 15.2 million Filipino FB users, 13 million were in the Pinoys contributed to 101 million conversations.

A letter sent by Aby Go, the senior account manager of Ogilvy to Bilang Pilipino via MediaQuest which was published by Interaksyon.com states, “We define election-related conversation as any post or comment that contains highly specific and targeted keywords or hashtags related to either the election itself, a candidate, a party, or a specific topic that might be playing a large role in the election itself.”

“We define an interaction as a post, like, comment, share,” the letter ads.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, running for president and vice president respectively and under PDP-Laban dominated as most talked about candidates.

Presidential Candidates:

  1. Rodrigo Duterte: 64%
  2. Mar Roxas: 47%
  3. Grace Poe: 40%
  4. Jejomar Binay: 27%
  5. Miriam Defensor Santiago: 19%

Vice Presidential Candidates:

  1. Alan Cayetano: 44%
  2. Ferdinand Marcos: 35%
  3. Leni Robredo: 33%
  4. Antonio Trillanes: 20%
  5. Francis Escudero: 16%
  6. Gregorio Honasan: 3%

“Since people may discuss more than one presidential candidate, the percentages will add up to more than 100 percent,” Go stated. “The numbers are, however, useful for comparing the overall size of discussion for one candidate against another.”

Meanwhile, here are the topics discussed over the site since November 2015.

  1. Transparency: 66%
  2. Economy: 30%
  3. Education: 30%
  4. Social Welfare: 25%
  5. Defense and Foreign Policy: 17%
  6. Health: 15%
  7. Infrastructure: 6%
  8. Environment: 3%
  9. Trafficking: 1%

“While transparency remains a highly talked about topic among “netizens,” there has been an increase in conversations surrounding education, social welfare, health, and the environment since March,” Go said.
