Former Chief Justice Renato Corona Passes Away At 67.

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday morning announced the d_ath of former chief justice Renato Corona at the age of 67 due to cardiac arrest.

The family of the lawyer and former member of the cabinet confirmed the de_th and the cause that happened at 1:48 a.m.

According to the SC Public Information Office (PIO), Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has directed that the flag in SC and all courts nationwide be flown at half mast to mourn the passing of the former chief justice.

The late chief justice was formerly diagnosed with diabetes and had undergone heart bypass surgery twice.

Reportedly, the remains of Corona will be brought to the Heritage Park in Taguig where a public viewing will be held on Saturday.

Corona became a Cabinet member of former presidents Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo before he was appointed as the chief justice of the Supreme Court.

He was later impeached from his office because of constitutional violation.

Corona obtained his law degree from the Ateneo Law School in 1974 and earned his Masters of Law degree from Harvard University where he focused on foreign investment policies and the regulation of corporate and financial institutions.

He also became the assistant executive secretary for legal affairs under the Ramos administration before he was promoted as deputy executive secretary and was appointed as chief presidential legal counsel and member of the Cabinet.

After Ramos’ term, Arroyo appointed him as her chief of staff and when she became president, Corona then serves as presidential chief of staff, presidential spokesperson and acting executive secretary.

Corona was impeached for failing to disclose certain bank deposits in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) and was voted 20-3 by the Senate for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution for failing to disclose his wealth in his SALN.
