One of the countries that a lot of people desire to visit is the United States of America or U.S.A. Although it is not one of the visa-free countries thus entry is quite not easy, a lot of people would do everything to get to it.
This country is known for its beautiful spots and its affordable cost of living. As what they usually say, what the rich people in America eat can also be eaten by the not-so-wealthy ones.
Are you one of those who wanted to experience traveling in the United States or you are set to fly to U.S.A for some opportunities? There are do’s and don’t that you must consider.
Based on an article on Tripsavvy and Timberlane, here are the lists of the do’s and don’ts in visiting the United States:
DO’S
- Do give tip to waiters or waitresses or to any employee that have provided you with good service. According to the article, giving tip is part of the tradition in U.S.
- Do be on time. People in U.S. are time conscious and arrive right on the scheduled set.
- Do follow traffic rules. U.S. is one of the countries that are strict when it comes to the rules in the roads. You must avoid disobeying them to avoid accidents and penalties.
- Do not ask about political views. It’s a no-no in U.S to ask about political views most especially when you just met a person.
- Do address older men or women as “Mr.”, “Madam”, “Ma’am”, etc. to show respect.
- Do look at the eyes of another person when you are talking to him or her. Not doing so is considered evasive”.
DON’TS
- Don’t use American slang. According to Trip Savvy, using their slang is insulting to the Americans.
- Don’t give cash gifts unless you are very close or family members. It is considered impolite in U.S.
- Don’t call a person from the South “Yankee” as it is insulting to them.
- Don’t forget to observe proper hygiene. Having bad odor or smell is a violation of the personal space.
- Don’t stand within an arm’s length of another person unless you are very close. It is also considered a violation of the personal space.
- Don’t step back from a stranger interacting with you. It is normal for strangers in America to approach each other based on Timberlane.
- Don’t ask about income as it is considered impolite.
- Don’t call the waiter’s or waitress’ attention by snapping fingers as it is offensive.
