PDP-Laban Forms “Super Majority” Coalition In Congress

PDP-Laban is expected to form the biggest coalition in Congress.

Political party of president-elect Rodrigo Duterte, Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), has formed a “super majority” coalition in the incoming 17th Congress.

Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez told the Inquirer that the party is close to achieving the biggest coalition in the congress’ history.

The top party-list group in this year’s election Ako-Bicol has also pledged a support for PDP-Laban. The party’s representative Rodel Batocabe said that an estimated 260 allies joined Duterte’s party. It is 90 percent of the estimated 290 members of the incoming congress.

According to Batocabe, the coalition was extra-ordinary since the PDP-Laban started only with three house members.

A total 31 party-list groups alsi backed Duterte’s administration. Batocabe revealed that 8 of the groups were removed as they joined other political parties.

“Alvarez wanted a clean alliance, not cluttered, because he wants to deal directly with parties and not blocs,”  he said.

Aside from the party-list groups, several political parties recently formed a union with PDP-Laban. They are the Nacionalista Party(NP), National Unity Party (NUP), Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), National People’s Coalition (NPC). It is expected that the party will form the biggest single party.

Botacabe said that having “super majority” in House of Representatives would help in the approval of the presumptive-president’s agenda.
