200,000 Residents Were Forced To Evacuate And Take Shelter In Bicol Region
200,000 RESIDENTS FORCED TO EVACUATE – As Typhoon Rolly Nears, local authorities imposed a mandatory evacuation in high-risks areas.
Over 200,000 residents in the Philippines were ordered to evacuate their homes this Saturday as the country braces for “the most powerful typhoon of the year”.
According to the Philippines’ weather bureau, even if Rolly doesn’t develop into a super typhoon, it would still cause immense damage upon landfall. With this, Rolly brings intense rains, strong winds, and storm surges in affected areas.
Rolly comes just a week after Typhoon Quinta slammed into Bicol, causing the deaths of 22 residents and flooding low-land villages. Afterward, it swept across the South China sea all the way to Vietnam.
“Storm surges are imminent on our east coast. We are monitoring Mayon and Taal volcanos for possible volcanic mudflows“, said Mark Timbal, spokesman for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, evacuating and relocating people in shelters have also become an issue for local authorities. As such, only a maximum of five people would be allowed to take shelter in a single school room.
Previously, these rooms could hold up to 16 people. Meanwhile, hundreds of passengers were left stranded as the coast guard ordered a cease on all maritime activities. Currently, Catanduanes has been placed under signal No. 3 as Rolly approaches the Bicol Region.
