A large fish was found stranded on the shoreline at the boundary of the coastlines of Barangay Sto. Niño Sur, Arevalo, and Barangay Alegre, Oton, Iloilo City just this morning October 24, 2023. This fish is known as a Sunfish. By looking at the picture, it can be estimated to weigh at least 50 kilograms or even more. Earlier today, there was a recorded magnitude 2.6 earthquake with its epicenter in Maasin, Iloilo, which might be one of the reasons why this Sunfish surfaced. According to local folklore, large fish often appear before a significant natural disaster.
Iloilo is already known for its abundance of large fish, many of which are caught even near the bridge in the city center. In recent months, there have been numerous reports of catching large fish, particularly tuna, in Antique.
There are also speculations from netizens that this event might be a sign or omen because the fish washed up on the shoreline of Barangay Sto. Niño Sur. The Sto. Niño is revered during the Dinagyang festival in the area, and this situation may be related to the controversy surrounding a Vlogger known as Kalinte, who became famous for his profanity-laden vlogs.
From a scientific perspective, there could be various reasons for the Sunfish’s appearance, including a lack of food.
Whatever the cause of this event may be, let’s hope that it doesn’t foreshadow a major disaster. It’s also advisable for the local government to take precautions and be prepared for any potential disasters. Source
