The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported on Friday that nine areas had exceeded the permissible limit for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP), commonly known as toxic red tide, as of October 26.

The following areas have been identified as the sites where toxic red tide has been detected:

  1. Sapian Bay (Ivisan and Sapian in Capiz; Mambuquiao and Camanci, Batan in Aklan)
  2. Coastal waters of Pilar in Capiz
  3. Coastal waters of President Roxas in Capiz
  4. Coastal waters of Roxas City in Capiz
  5. Coastal waters of Gigantes Islands, Carles in Iloilo
  6. Coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol
  7. Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur
  8. Coastal waters of San Benito in Surigao del Norte
  9. Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur

BFAR warned that shellfish and Acetes sp. (small shrimp or “alamang”) from these areas are unsafe to eat. PSP or toxic red tide is an allergic reaction that poses health risks to those who consume it. It is typically contracted by consuming shellfish and various types of small shrimp caught from affected seas.

It leads to symptoms such as itching of the mouth and throat, dizziness, vomiting, and, in severe cases, numbness and paralysis. In critical instances, it can even be fatal. This serves as a cautionary advisory to residents who may source their seafood from these mentioned areas to avoid consuming these products to prevent any health-related illnesses or complications.

Through the collaboration of BFAR and local government units, strict monitoring and necessary measures are needed to ensure the safety of the public. Every individual has the right to have information about the condition of the products they consume, and this is a matter of high priority. As part of the campaign for health and safety, education and examination of potential food hazards are vital.

May we all be discerning and responsible in our food choices. Being cautious and understanding the warnings of authorities can help maintain the health and safety of our families. This serves as a reminder that BFAR will continue to provide updates on the status of areas affected by the toxic red tide to keep us all informed and vigilant about this issue.
