In Brgy. Mt. Diwata, Monkayo, Davao de Oro, a landslide occurred earlier this afternoon, January 18. According to the latest report, seven people have perished, while ten individuals are currently missing, and two others are injured.
The Monkayo-LGU announced a temporary halt to the search and rescue operations due to the high possibility of a second landslide. The rainfall caused by Shoreline and the northeast monsoon has resulted in the softening of the ground in the area, posing higher risks for rescuers and potential victims.
The unexpected event has brought profound grief to the community of Brgy. Mt. Diwata and the entire Monkayo. The seven casualties, ten missing individuals, and two injured have left families and friends in dire need of assistance and support from the government and various sectors of society.
Rescuers and volunteers from different agencies exerted their best efforts to save the landslide victims. However, due to the thorough assessment by Monkayo-LGU of the ground conditions and the potential for further rainfall, they decided to temporarily halt the operation to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
