Cornerstone Entertainment has denounced the controversial tweet linked to their talent, Moira dela Torre, concerning Bangsamoro pop star Shaira, who is currently facing a copyright complaint.
Several fake screenshots and quote cards circulated, where the Mindanao-based singer was referred to as “Shaira tempered glass” by the Cornerstone artist. This emerged after Shaira allegedly mimicked the tone of Lenka’s “Trouble is a Friend” without permission.
“Screenshots and graphics of a fake quote by Cornerstone artist Moira Dela Torre regarding her stance on the controversial copyright issue between Bangsamoro singer Shaira and Australian Pop singer Lenka have been circulating on social media,” Cornerstone Entertainment stated in a Thursday release. “We at Cornerstone Entertainment ask the public to refrain from sharing the fake quote and to be wary of any post that seeks to misrepresent the singer-songwriter’s true sentiments regarding any issue or topic of public discussion.”
Shaira’s song “Selos” gained sudden online fame in March, garnering thousands of views. AHS Productions had previously uploaded a video on YouTube inspired by Lenka’s song “Trouble is a Friend.” The song also trended on Facebook.
However, eyebrows were raised when many netizens noticed it was uploaded on Spotify and other music streaming platforms without proper credit to Lenka.
This prompted action from Lenka’s camp, leading Shaira to voluntarily take down “Selos.” The AHS Channel apologized for the issue and pledged to obtain the appropriate cover license.
Recently, Moira defended Australian singer Lenka, emphasizing that cover artists should respect the rights of the original artists behind the songs.
