Alice Guo, the controversial mayor of Bamban, Tarlac, has been expelled from the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), as ordered by the party’s chairman, former senator Tito Sotto. The decision was based on a petition from Tarlac Governor Susan Yap, citing allegations against Mayor Guo that have cast a shadow over her integrity and adherence to lawful conduct.
The expulsion letter, shared by Sotto with Senate reporters on Sunday, June 23, emphasized the party’s strict stance against any form of unlawful activity or behavior that could tarnish its principles. “The NPC does not tolerate any unlawful acts or any appearance of impropriety by its members that will undermine the principle of our party,” Sotto stated in his letter to Yap. He further noted, “After due consultation with leaders and members of our party and considering the gravity of charges and on-going investigations against Mayor Guo, I hereby order the removal of Mayor Alice Guo from the roster of the Nationalist People’s Coalition.”
Governor Yap, in her petition to the NPC, highlighted the investigation surrounding Mayor Guo, which she argued has severely compromised Guo’s honesty and integrity. “The recent investigation involving Mayor Guo has placed in great question her honesty and integrity,” Yap wrote. She emphasized that the NPC would not tolerate involvement in illegal activities, particularly online gambling and other crimes. “Knowing that our party would not tolerate any involvement in online illegal gambling, and other crimes, it appears fitting that given the present questions surrounding Mayor Guo, she should be removed from the party,” Yap added.
The controversy surrounding Mayor Guo stems from her preventive suspension ordered by the Ombudsman. This suspension is linked to a graft case filed by the Department of Local and Interior Government. The charges involve serious illegal acts, including connections to the illicit activities of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) within her province.
Guo’s expulsion from the NPC and her suspension reflects the severity of the accusations against her. The NPC’s swift action underscores its commitment to maintaining the integrity and ethical standards of its members. Sotto’s decisive move to expel Guo demonstrates the party’s resolve to distance itself from any member whose actions could potentially damage its reputation and undermine public trust.
As the investigations proceed, the outcome will determine the full extent of Mayor Guo’s alleged misconduct. Meanwhile, her removal from the NPC marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to uphold ethical governance within political parties and local government units. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in public service.
