The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued its weather forecast for August 14, 2024, highlighting the impact of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) on Northern and Central Luzon. This monsoonal system is expected to bring varying weather conditions across different regions, potentially leading to flash floods and landslides in some areas.
Tropical Cyclone Activity
As of 3:00 AM today, Severe Tropical Storm Ampil (2407) remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Located approximately 1,895 kilometers east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon, Ampil is moving northeastward slowly. It has maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h near the center, with gustiness reaching up to 135 km/h. Although Ampil is not expected to enter PAR, its presence is being closely monitored as it could influence weather patterns in the region.
Weather Conditions by Area
- Ilocos Region, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands: These areas will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms, primarily due to the Southwest Monsoon. Residents are advised to be vigilant as moderate to heavy rains may lead to flash floods and landslides.
- Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, and the rest of Cagayan Valley: Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are expected. The Southwest Monsoon remains the primary cause, and while the rainfall will be generally lighter, severe thunderstorms could trigger flash floods or landslides.
- Metro Manila and the rest of the country: Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms will prevail, mainly caused by localized thunderstorms. These conditions may lead to flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
Wind and Coastal Water Conditions
- Northern and Central Luzon: Light to moderate winds from the southwest are expected, resulting in slight to moderate coastal waters with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.
- The rest of the country: Light to moderate winds from the south to southwest will bring slight to moderate coastal waters, with wave heights between 0.6 to 1.5 meters.
Flood Advisories
Pagasa has issued General Flood Advisories for the Ilocos Region (Region 1) and Northern Mindanao (Region 10). Residents in these regions are urged to monitor updates and take necessary precautions, particularly in flood-prone areas.
The public is advised to stay informed through official Pagasa updates and to prepare for any potential hazards associated with the ongoing monsoon and weather disturbances.
