Phivolcs Releases Footage of Ash Emissions from Mt. Kanlaon

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released new footage capturing ash emissions from the Kanlaon Volcano summit crater, recorded earlier today between 9:07 a.m. and 9:18 a.m. The video footage, taken by the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in Canlaon City, documents several ash emissions producing distinct grayish plumes that rose approximately 500 meters above the crater, drifting in a northward direction.

Phivolcs has maintained an Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon, indicating that the volcano remains in a moderate state of unrest. This level suggests heightened activity and serves as a reminder for surrounding communities and authorities to remain vigilant. At this alert level, there is a possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, minor ashfall, and volcanic gas emissions that could affect residents and local wildlife in proximity to the summit crater.

Phivolcs advised residents and tourists to avoid entering the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around Kanlaon, as the area is at higher risk for sudden eruptions and unexpected volcanic hazards. They also cautioned civil aviation authorities, recommending that pilots avoid flying near the summit due to the risk posed by airborne ash, which can damage aircraft engines.

The Kanlaon Volcano, straddling the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, is one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes and has erupted numerous times in recorded history. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire contributes to its ongoing seismic and volcanic activity. Today’s ash emissions are part of an observed increase in volcanic activity that began in recent weeks, including minor volcanic tremors and gas emissions that have persisted near the summit.

According to Phivolcs, the elevated seismic activity observed at Kanlaon is consistent with magma movement beneath the surface, which may result in more ash emissions or even larger eruptions if the magma reaches the surface. The agency is closely monitoring the situation and will issue updates should any significant changes occur.

Authorities in the surrounding communities have been reminded to prepare for potential evacuations if the volcano’s activity intensifies. Phivolcs encourages the public to stay informed through official channels and to follow any precautionary measures issued by local authorities.
