FILIPINO CORE VALUES – These are the set of cultural and moral principles that shape the morals and behavior of many people.
The Philippines has a rich history and one of the most essential parts of it is the set of values rooted in it. These are the values that Filipinos use as a guide in their daily lives from how they behave, establish relationships, and make decisions. These values are the foundational principles that shape the culture, actions, and priorities of a person and reflect ethical beliefs, personal standards, and goals.
According to the Department Of Education (DepEd), “Maka-Diyos,” “Maka-Tao,” “Makakalikasan,” and “Makabansa” are the four core values identified that must be instilled in the students.
- Maka-Diyos (God-fearing)
- Maka-Tao (Love of People)
- Makakalikasan (Love of Nature)
- Makabansa (Love of Country)
But generally, Filipinos have developed a lot that influenced their lives.
Some of these values are:
- Amor Proprio (Loving Oneself) – This refers to our self-love and self-care and is related to dignity.
- Awa (Compassion for Others) – This could also mean grace, sympathy, charity, or pity.
- Bahala Na (Let Go and Let God) – A value that speaks volumes about a Filipino’s faith and optimism.
- Bayanihan (We Are Heroes to Each Other) – This value is about helping other people without expecting anything in return. This value is always highlighted during calamities where people help each other amid adversities. This is an enduring Filipino culture.
- Hospitality – Filipinos are known in the world for this value. We have always been friendly and excellent hosts.
- Delicadeza – This refers to how we value our reputation and maintain our dignity.
- Family First – Many Filipinos, especially breadwinners, are willing to sacrifice everything for their family’s sake.
- Karangalan or Honor – This value has kept a lot of people going. One, for example, even the poorest among us do everything to send their kids to school. This is how they value honor – by everything for those we love.
- Kusang-Palo – This term means taking initiative. Filipinos are proactive and we don’t wait for someone to tell us before acting.
- Utang na Loob – This value is about giving back what you owe to a person.
