Gary Valenciano, fondly called “Mr. Pure Energy,” proved that faith can triumph over physical challenges during the first day of his concert, Pure Energy: One More Time. Held on December 20, 2024, at the iconic Big Dome, the concert was both a celebration of his 40 years in the music industry and a testament to his unwavering trust in God.
The night began with an emotional opening by Gary’s daughter, Kiana Valenciano, who candidly asked the audience for prayers. “There’s a situation happening backstage,” Kiana revealed, hinting at the struggles her father was facing. Despite the tension, she entertained the crowd with her original songs, setting a supportive tone for the evening.
Gary made a dynamic entrance, leaping onstage to the upbeat tunes of “Shout for Joy” and “That’s Why.” However, keen-eyed fans quickly noticed an IV plug in his hand, a telltale sign of a health issue. After delivering a few songs, Gary paused to address the audience, explaining that he had been unwell before the concert.
“I know many have been getting sick lately. Kasama na ako sa listahan na ‘yun,” he shared. Gary disclosed that he had been vomiting and was severely dehydrated prior to his performance. “I have never faced this kind of situation before,” he admitted, expressing vulnerability while reassuring fans of his determination to press on.
Despite his struggles, Gary poured his heart into the performance, singing crowd favorites like “Heto Na Naman” and emotional ballads like “Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos.” The latter, he said, held a special meaning for him that night. “I really need to hear this message,” Gary confessed, his words resonating deeply with the audience.
Midway through the concert, Gary’s condition visibly deteriorated. He frequently paused to hydrate and even sat down during some songs. “You don’t mind kung paminsan-minsan I take some time off and I just sit down?” he asked the understanding crowd.
Ultimately, Gary decided to adjust his plans. “I am really struggling up here. I don’t know if I can finish this show,” he admitted. Despite this, he expressed his intent to perform songs that could uplift the audience, including the moving “Warrior is a Child,” delivered against a serene water backdrop.
Gary’s heartfelt finale, “Take Me Out of the Dark,” encapsulated the night’s theme of faith amid adversity. With tears in their eyes, fans sang along, appreciating Gary’s courage and sincerity. After his performance, he was immediately taken to the hospital.
His wife, Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano, later provided updates on social media. “He ingested something and vomited so many times… but he said he wants to do it!” she wrote. Reassuring fans, she shared that Gary’s vitals were stable and that he was recovering from dehydration.
In a video, Gary himself addressed his supporters. “Hey, guys, I’m getting better. Good people [are] taking care of me. I’ll be okay, don’t worry. God bless,” he said, affirming his resilience and gratitude.
The concert, though cut short, became a powerful testament to Gary’s faith and the enduring connection he shares with his fans. It wasn’t just a celebration of his career but also a profound reminder that even in moments of weakness, the human spirit can soar when anchored in trust and belief.
