Dr. Ong, who has been a prominent figure in providing medical advice through social media platforms, emphasized that his commitment to public service remains steadfast. He assured his supporters that he will continue to advocate for good governance and support candidates who share his vision. “I will continue to support good governance and the candidates who espouse the same ideals as mine. Our advocacy to help the poor Filipinos continues even in my private capacity,” he affirmed.

In September 2024, Dr. Ong revealed that he had been diagnosed with sarcoma, a type of cancer, with a tumor measuring 16 x 13 x 12 cm located behind his heart and in front of his spine. Despite his health challenges, he declared his intention to run for senator in the May 2025 elections. Due to ongoing medical treatment in Singapore, his wife, Dr. Liza Ong, submitted his certificate of candidacy on his behalf in October 2024.

Throughout his medical journey, Dr. Ong has kept the public informed about his condition. In October 2024, he shared a positive update, stating that his tumor had shrunk by 60% following treatment. He described this development as a “miracle,” given the challenges associated with treating sarcoma.

The campaign period for senatorial candidates and party-list groups commenced on February 11, 2025, and will continue until May 10, 2025. Dr. Ong’s withdrawal from the race underscores the importance of prioritizing personal health, even amidst a strong desire to serve the public.

Dr. Ong expressed deep gratitude to his supporters for their prayers and encouragement during this challenging time. He remains a respected figure in the medical community and continues to be a source of inspiration for many Filipinos through his dedication to public health education and service.

As the election season progresses, Dr. Ong’s decision serves as a reminder of the personal sacrifices that public servants often make and the critical importance of health and well-being in the pursuit of service to others.
