Branches Of Government

The three branches of government in the Philippines are legislative, executive, and judicial. The power is equally divided among these three types.

  • LEGISLATIVE

This branch includes Congress, which is composed of the Senate (the upper house) and the House of Representatives (the lower house). They have the power to make, alter, and repeal laws. Congress is responsible for drafting, reviewing, amending, and repealing proposed laws and bills. It also has the power to amend the 1987 Constitution, and among its responsibilities is passing the annual budget of the country.

  • EXECUTIVE

This is the branch that has the power to carry out and enforce laws. It is composed of the president and the vice president, the cabinet, executive departments, independent agencies, and other boards, commissions, and committees. As per the Constitution, the President is granted the authority to choose the members of his Cabinet. The president and the vice president are elected, and each term lasts for six years.

  • JUDICIAL

This branch holds the power to evaluate and interpret the meaning of laws and apply laws to individual cases. It also decides if the law violates the Constitution. This is composed of the Supreme Court and the other Philippine courts. The Supreme Court is made up of a Chief Justice and fourteen (14) Associate Justices.
