The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) has officially announced the first four entries for its highly anticipated 51st edition, marking what many are calling a bold new era for Philippine cinema. With a diverse mix of genres and powerhouse casts, the initial lineup promises to draw massive audiences this December.

Leading the pack is “Call Me Mother,” a comedy-drama helmed by acclaimed director Jun Robles Lana. The film stars box-office titans Nadine Lustre and Vice Ganda in a fresh and unexpected pairing that explores themes of identity, belonging, and chosen families.
Next is “Reconnect,” a heartwarming family drama directed by Jade Castro. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Carmina Villarroel, Gloria Diaz, Alexa Miro, Gerald Anderson, and Zoren Legaspi. Set against the backdrop of generational conflict and reconciliation, Reconnect is poised to tug at the heartstrings of Filipino families.
Thriller fans can look forward to “Manila’s Finest,” a gritty crime-thriller directed by Cannes-winning filmmaker Raymond Red and headlined by Piolo Pascual. This high-stakes film explores the moral complexities of justice and corruption in the capital’s underworld.
Rounding out the first wave is the much-awaited horror anthology “Shake Rattle and Roll: Evil Origins.” The reboot of the beloved franchise boasts an all-star cast including Ivana Alawi, Loisa Andalio, Carla Abellana, Richard Gutierrez, and Francine Diaz. The film is co-directed by Shugo Praico, Joey de Guzman, and Ian Loreños, promising spine-tingling tales rooted in Filipino folklore and urban legends.
