Senator Imee Marcos has called on Malacañang to submit a comprehensive report on the sudden death of Filipino businessman Paolo Tantoco, amid speculation linking First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and other government officials to the incident.

Tantoco reportedly passed away while in Los Angeles, California, with circulating claims suggesting that his death was caused by the effects of illegal substances. Unconfirmed reports have alleged that he was part of the First Lady’s entourage during a visit to the U.S., raising questions about whether members of the delegation knew the situation.
In a press briefing, Sen. Marcos emphasized the need for transparency, especially when the names of high-ranking officials are being linked to a sensitive matter. “It is only proper that we clarify the facts to dispel rumors and maintain public trust. If no one has anything to hide, let the truth come out,” she said.
The senator also requested an official statement regarding the First Lady’s whereabouts during the incident and urged the release of relevant documents, such as the medical examiner’s report and travel logs, to help clear the air. “This is not about casting blame but about accountability and protecting the dignity of public office,” Marcos added.
Social media platforms, meanwhile, have erupted with mixed reactions to the senator’s statements. Some netizens praised her for her courage in speaking up, while others accused her of politicizing a personal tragedy and attempting to undermine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Legal experts and commentators have also weighed in on the matter. “The burden of proof lies with those making the accusations,” noted one user, cautioning against speculative conclusions without hard evidence.
Others argued that since the incident occurred in the United States, the matter falls under U.S. jurisdiction and should be handled by their investigative bodies. “It’s the role of American authorities to determine the cause of death and whether any criminal activity took place,” one comment read.
As the issue continues to stir online debate, the Palace has yet to issue an official response. The public awaits clarification amid the growing calls for transparency and accountability from both the Senate and the Executive branch.
