Aiza Seguerra and Liza Diño have raised funds for detained Kidapawan farmers.
Former child star Aiza Seguerra and his wife actress Liza Diño have raised funds so that they can post bail for dozens of farmers who were detained following the violent dispersal in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato earlier this month.
Yesterday, Liza Diño took the Facebook to share that they have raised more than 500,000 for the Kidapawan farmers. She also said that the donations came from the people in entertainment industry as well as from the other private groups.
“We were able to raise funds to cover the whole amount of 546,000 for the farmers!!! Thank god!!! Most came from artists and friends who readily gave their support, but there were other organizations who donated as well to cover the amount,” they wrote.
79 peasants were arrested after thousands of farmers stage a protest to ask their provincial government for rice subsidies, following the El Niño phenomenon that hit their lands since November last year. They blocked the national highway of Kidapawan for four days before the dispersal occurred.
On Wednesday, the couple has also attended the hearing at the Municipal Trial Court in Kidapawan. Judge Rebecca De Leon reduced the bail from 12,000 to 6,000.
Liza Diño also said that this is just the start and their goal is to dismiss all the farmers from the case.
Aiza Seguerra recently made headlines after he lambasted North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Mendoza who was caught on video saying that she will block rice donations from politicians and other individuals. Gov. Mendoza said that it is an insult to her governance.
