Telecommunications companies opt faster internet following Dutertes’ warning

Telecommunications companies namely Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company support call for faster internet following a pronouncement by incoming president Rodrigo Duterte to improve their services.

The country’s biggest telecommunications companies have released statements in reaction to to Duterte’s statement. Prior to this, Duterte expressed his warning that he will allow foreign players enter the market if the two incumbent telcos do not improve their services.

“We support the call for faster internet. In fact, Globe is at the forefront of building the much needed infrastructure nationwide to make Internet services easily accessible either through mobile or wireline. This is supported by heavy investments over the years to make sure the Philippines is at par with other countries in terms of technology use,” said Yoly Crisanto, the Globe’s Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.

He added that the government also plays a role in improving the Internet service which includes promoting IP peering and addressing the issues on permitting, right of way and site acquisition which could significantly help on faster and at less cost infrastructure builds.
On the other hand, PLDT spokesman Ramon Isberto said that the company is aligned with the government efforts to improve telecom services. He said, that the company is in fact in the middle of a major 3-year network investment program which is in process of improving the telecom and Internet services for PLDT and Smart customers. He added that their company will support national development initiatives.

Based on records, the Philippines is among those countries with the slowest and most expensive internet connections in the world.
