Wesley So, born in Bacoor City in Cavite, Philippines, won against Magnus Carlsen in this year’s World Fischer Random Chess Championship at the Henie Onstad Art Center, Norway on Saturday, November 2 (Sunday, November 3, PH time). He was officially crowned as the new king of Fischer Random.
Wesley So, who represented the Philippines before leaving the country to play for the United States in 2014, tied on the first game and won second and final round in the final showdown of the three-day title series.
“I’m very happy! It’s my favorite type of chess, and it hasn’t been popular until the last couple of years. I usually win tournaments the first time and never again. Magnus had a bad couple of days if it was regular chess he would probably have beaten me easily,” So said in an interview with NRK. “To me, mainly chess is art – that’s why I like Fischer Random a lot, there is a lot of creativity.”
So also said that people also loved playing chess because of Carlsen, the first winner of the previous World Fischer Random Chess Championship. He also mentioned that he was happy to be this year’s world champion “but it doesn’t change much“.
