Conditional sentences are generally classified into four types, and in this article, we will focus on the first conditional.

First Conditional Sentences

What is a first conditional sentence? This is used to talk about real and possible situations in the future. It focuses on events that are likely to happen, provided that a certain condition is met. The structure is usually: If + Present Simple, … will + Base Verb. It is important to note that the if-clause uses the present simple tense, while the main clause uses will followed by the base form of the verb.

Remember: This is not about general truths or hypothetical situations.

You can also go around with variations using modal verbs, apart from using will, to express the degree of certainty, permission, or a recommendation about the outcome,

and here are some examples:

  • If you finish early, we can go shopping.
  • If he works hard, he might get promoted.
  • If they practice, they should win the game.

Another variation is that it can also be used in negative forms, such as the following:

  • If you don’t water the plants, they will die.
  • If she doesn’t study, she will fail the exam.
