KINDS OF VERBS – There are many types of verbs and here’s five of them and how you can use them in a sentence.

Verbs are action words but this is not where it simply ends. Verbs have different types and each type has a different function in a sentence. English is an amazing language and when it comes to basic but important things, this is one of them.

  • ACTION

This represents the action done in a sentence. They are not linking type – they are the main action that expresses movements. They are often used after the noun or pronoun that serves as the subject in the sentence.

  6. had been – Past Perfect Continuous
  7. will be – Future Continuous
  8. will have – Future Perfect
  9. will have been – Future Perfect Continuous

It’s function is to connect the subject of a sentence to an adjective, noun, or pronoun to complete the thought of the action word. Some of its most common form is related to the five senses and verbs such as becomeappear, and seem.

  • TRANSITIVE

In a sentence, it uses a direct object, a noun, that receives the action. Without the direct object, the sentence with the transitive verbs is incomplete or doesn’t make sense. Some examples are “address,” “borrow,” “bring,” “discuss,” “raise,” “offer,” “pay,” “write,” “promise,” and “have.”

Example:

The teacher discussed the different types of personalities. (Correct)

The teacher discussed in the video. (Incorrect)

In these two sentences, it is required to state what is being discussed for a sentence with a complete thought.

  • INTRANSITIVE

This is the type that does not use a direct object as it does not take an object. Some examples are “deteriorate,” “vote,” “sit,” “increase,” “laugh,” “originate,” “fluctuate,” and “trend.”
