What is a modal verb?
This is also called as modal auxiliary verb and is used with a main verb to express possibility, ability, permission, or necessity. They can be tricky but is actually simple once you learn how they work. Some of the most common examples are:
- can
- may
- might
- could
- should
- would
- will
- must
They are a type of an auxiliary verb, one of the several kinds of verbs and a few of the less commonly used are shall and ought. Some acts as main verbs or as modal auxiliaries depending on the context.
When they are used?
- Likelihood using should and must to show probability without certainty
Examples:
Your parents must be so proud of you.
My baby sister should be asleep by now.
- Possibility using could, may, or might to express something is possible but not sure.
Examples:
I could use these information in the future.
You might want to use these things for your project.
- Ability using can if positive and cannot or can’t if negative.
Examples:
I can’t come to the phone right now.
I can come to the party.
- Permission using can, may, or could to ask to do something.
Examples:
Can I use the toilet?
May I go out?
- Request using will, would, can, or could usually used at the start of the sentence.
Examples:
Will you turn down the music?
Can you at least be quiet?
- Command must, have, or need to express an order to someone.
Examples:
You must wash your face before sleeping.
Everyone need to be her before the clock strikes 8:00 PM.
- Suggestion/advice using should to recommend a course of action but not in a commanding way.
Examples:
You should try the restaurant’s pizza.
You should eat less to lose weight.
- Obligation or necessity using must, have, and need.
Examples:
I have to wait for my friends before ordering.
You don’t need to come to class if you are feeling sick.
