TYPES OF PREPOSITIONS – There are four main types, and some even belong to more than one type. Here are the examples.

What is a preposition? These are the words that show the relationship between elements in a sentence, indicating relationships of place, time, direction, and other abstract or logical connections. They are often used to describe where, when, or how something happens.

Some prepositions are easy to confuse and misuse, just like the prepositions “with,” “over,” and “by.”

Some prepositions can be used in different ways, with their meaning determined only by the context. There are over 100 single-word prepositions in the English language, but there are the most common ones used in daily conversations. There are also different types where words are grouped into four main categories

List of prepositions commonly used:

  • A: aboard, about, above, absent, across, after, against, along, alongside, amid (or “amidst”), among (or “amongst”), around, as, at, atop
  • B: bar (or “barring”), before, behind, below, beneath, beside (or “besides”), between, beyond, but, by
  • C: circa, concerning, counting
  • D: despite, down, during
  • E: effective, except (or “excepting”), excluding
  • F: failing, following, for, from
  • I: in, including, inside, into
  • L: less, like
  • M: minus
  • N: near, next, notwithstanding
  • O: of, off, on, onto, opposite, out, outside, over

  • S: short, since
  • T: than, through, throughout, to, toward (or “towards”)

PLACE – This shows where something is or where something happened, such as under, over, above, below, between, in, out, on, at, by, and many more.

Examples:

  • The cat is sleeping under the table.
  • The books are on the shelf.
  • My keys are inside the drawer.
  • The dog is hiding behind the couch.
  • The lamp is beside the bed.

TIME – This shows when something happened or will happen and the duration. They always describe when the action happened, such as in (month/year), on (day), at (time), before, during, after, since, until, and many more.

Examples:

  • I was born in October.
  • I’ll see you on Monday.
  • We stayed up until midnight.
  • Let’s finish the project by Friday.
  • She called me after lunch.

DIRECTION or MOVEMENT – This shows how something is moving or which way it’s going, such as to, into, towards, through, across, up, down, around, past, and many others.

Examples:

  • We ran across the street to catch the bus.
  • She walked towards the exit.
  • He ran into the house.
  • They went up the stairs.
  • She moved away from the window.

MANNER – This shows how or why something happens.

  • He spoke in a loud voice.
  • She did it without hesitation.
  • She paid by credit card.
  • He explained it in detail.
  • They traveled by car.
