What are the different types of sentences?
There are four different types of sentences namely declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory and here are some of their examples.
A sentence is a set of words that has a subject or the topic, and a predicate or what is said about the topic. A sentence expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Sentences can be much longer and more complex and the first thing to know about them is its different types.
The different types of sentences in English:
- Declarative Sentence – This an assertive type of sentence that is informative and ends in a full stop or the period. This is the standard and is often a simple sentence to express a fact, an opinion, an observation, or an explanation.
Examples:
- In my opinion, the movie is not as good as the book.
- I like Snape more than Dumbledore.
- That is not the right thing to say to a person who is heartbroken.
- Imperative Sentence – This is the sentence that gives commands, instructions, or advice to others to tell them what to do. Usually, it ends with a period but exclamation point is also used to make it sound emphatic.
Examples:
- Sweep the floor before you mop it.
- Don’t hang up!
- Stop giving me that kind of look!
- Interrogative Sentence – This is the type that asks questions to request more details from an answer, to confirm something, or to fill in some missing information. They end with a question mark.
Examples:
- Where is room 102?
- Did you see her before she went missing?
- Am I wearing the right outfit?
- Exclamatory Sentence – This type of sentence behaves like a declarative but with more emotion, intense feeling, or that sense of urgency. It includes interjections like “Ouch!” or “Yippee!” to express sudden emotion. To express the extra emotion, it ends with an exclamation point.
Examples:
- Yikes! That’s a giant spider!
- That was a great match!
- Wow! This apple pie is so good!
