Cannes warmly welcomes back Brillante Ma. Mendoza.
Brillante Ma. Mendoza, a Filipino filmmaker, finally gives critic his reason of producing films that are taking a short journey in the Manila streets as he joins Cannes once again.
His latest entry for Cannes, “Ma’Rosa”, is another film that took place in the streets of Manila – streets which are greatly portraying the existence of poverty and profuse number of families who are experiencing this daily and have to do unnecessary things at times to earn money.
In the interview with the Inquirer, Brillante gave his side: He will continue making films that are taken in the poverty-stricken streets of Manila because things are still going the same.
Further, he stressed that it is the reality that is surrounding him. He would only stop doing films like this if the people in their neighborhood will become wealthy.
“Ma’Rosa”, which is originally bearing the title “Palit Ulo”, is about an owner of a small store along the street.
Ma’Rosa is forced to raise an amount that could buy the decision of the cops after being arrested for taking illegal dr*gs.
According to Brillante, the docu-drama movie is based on a real event which he experienced personally.
He shared that once there was a friend who wanted to borrow money from him. The amount would be used to pay a policeman.
Further, he shared that the difference in the film is with regards to how he portrayed a Filipino family. People who have seen it, specifically foreigners, really noticed the difference according to the filmmaker.
Brillante shared the casts of the docu-drama movie who were Jaclyn Jose, Julio Diaz, Baron Geisler, Maria Isabel Lopez, Kristofer King, Mercedes Cabral, Rene Durian, Mark Dionisio, Neil Ryan Sese and Mon Confiado.
Mark Anthony Fernandez, Felix Roco, Jomari Angeles and Andi Eigenmann were the newbies who will be joining the set as well.
