Olympic gymnast Carlos Yulo recently opened up about his struggles and controversies in a candid interview with Toni Gonzaga on her YouTube show, “Toni Talks.” Yulo, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, shared how he handled the public attention and criticisms that came his way after his victories.
Toni asked Yulo about how he managed both the celebration of his achievements and the controversies surrounding his life, “Nung nanalo ka, you were celebrated pero at the same time, ang daming controversy, paano mo na-handle ‘yun?”
In response, Yulo expressed his gratitude towards those who congratulated him, saying, “Sa mga nagko-congratulate sa ‘kin, talagang nagpapasalamat po talaga ako. Grateful ako na sine-celebrate nila ‘yung pagkapanalo ko. Sa mga taong nanghuhusga, kilala ko naman po kasi ‘yung sarili ko, alam ko kung ano ‘yung ginawa ko, malinis ‘yung konsensya ko.”
He acknowledged the criticisms but remained unfazed by them. “Hindi ako natatamaan, ‘di tumutusok at all. Kung hindi ako mabuting tao, hindi ako ibe-bless ni Lord nang ganun e,” Yulo said, emphasizing his confidence in his integrity and the blessings he has received.
During the interview, Gonzaga also asked Yulo why he had chosen to remain silent despite the issues surrounding him, particularly concerning his family. “Ganito na lang ang gagawin natin para maging kahit papaano magkaroon ng konting linaw kasi we are hearing one side of the story but you are not sharing your side of the story, bakit?” Gonzaga inquired.
Yulo revealed that he preferred to keep things private, saying, “Personal din po kasi masyado. Hindi na din po para malaman ng buong sambayanan kung ano ‘yung nangyari.” He added that he has already forgiven those involved and admitted his own mistakes. “Alam ko kung ano ‘yung mali ko, tinanggap ko ‘yun, pinagdasal ko ‘yun kay Lord, humingi ako ng tawad.”
Despite the challenges, Yulo is focusing on moving forward, particularly on his relationship with his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose. “Magpo-focus na ‘ko sa sarili ko ngayon and sa relationship namin ni Chloe,” he shared, marking a new chapter in his personal life.
