The entertainment industry is in mourning following the passing of Gloria Romero, affectionately known as the “Queen of Philippine Cinema.” Romero died peacefully on Saturday, January 25, at the age of 91, as confirmed by her daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, through social media.

Gloria Romero’s illustrious career spanned more than seven decades, with over 250 film and television credits. Known for her iconic performances in classics such as Dalagang Ilocana (1954), Tanging Yaman (2000), Magnifico (2003), and Rainbow’s Sunset (2018), Romero earned numerous accolades. Her achievements include three FAMAS Awards, two Gawad Urian Awards, and three Metro Manila Film Festival trophies, along with Lifetime Achievement Awards from prestigious organizations like FAMAS, Gawad Urian, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

Celebrities Pay Tribute

Tributes have poured in from all corners of the industry. Charo Santos-Concio took to Instagram to express her admiration for Romero, recalling her grace and brilliance on and off the screen. “Tita Glo wasn’t just an icon; she was a guiding light for so many of us. She showed us how to carry success with humility, navigate challenges with grace, and leave a legacy that transcends time,” Santos-Concio wrote.

Barbie Forteza, who worked with Romero in The Half Sisters and Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, shared her heartbreak on Twitter. “Buong buhay ko pong ipagmamalaki na nakatrabaho ko po kayo. Rest in paradise, Ms. Gloria Romero,” Forteza wrote.

Cherry Pie Picache, Amy Perez, and Robin Padilla also honored Romero’s memory. Padilla recalled her words of encouragement early in his career, saying, “Pagpupugay sa nag-iisang Ms. Gloria Romero… Kayo po ang aming tunay na tanging yaman.”

A Public Farewell

Romero’s wake is held at Arlington Memorial Chapels on Araneta Avenue, Quezon City. Public viewing is scheduled for January 27 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with family and friends’ visitation beginning at 1 p.m. A novena will take place at 5 p.m., followed by a mass at 6 p.m. on both days.
