Tony Awards 2018: Highlights & Shocking Speech From Robert De Niro

These are the highlights during the Tony Awards 2018 awards night, including the shocking speech of Robert De Niro.

The recently concluded Tony Awards 2018 once again proved that in this kind of performing arts diversity plays a major role.

The award-giving body for recognizing the remarkable works of art in theater is now celebrating its 72nd year.

One of the highlights during the awards night was the performance of the members of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as they performed the song ‘Seasons of Love’ from the musical ‘Rent’, based on the article published in ABS-CBN.

It was intended as a tribute for their teacher Melody Herzfeld who was the 2018 Excellence in Theatre Education awardee.

Aside from the winners, the speeches of the theater stars also became the highlights of the night.

They all wanted to stress out the diversity in the industry.

Lindsay Mendez, who won the best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical, said:

“I was told to change my last name from Mendez to Matthews or I wouldn’t work and I just want to say how proud I am to be part of a community that celebrates diversity and individuality and to all of you artists out there, be your true self and the world will take note.”

Furthermore, Andrew Garfield, who won for his work in “Angels in America” said this in his speech:

“We are all sacred and we all belong so let’s just bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked. Thank you so much.”

Based on the article, the most notable and intriguing speech was from two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro.

This was his statement against US President Donald Trump:

“I’m going to say one thing. **** Trump,” he said.

“It’s no longer down with Trump. It’s **** Trump.”

CBS may have censored that statement from De Niro but the audience at New York’s Radio City Music Hall during the Tony Awards 2018 clearly heard what he said.

Jhett Tolentino, a Tony-winning producer, stated something about it:

“It’s apparent that we are a very democratic community and that we support equality, so I’m so honored to be part of this community, especially kudos to Robert De Niro, big speech of the night, it’s a celebration of the theater so we can never go wrong.”
