Chino Trinidad, a distinguished figure in Philippine sports journalism, has passed away at the age of 56. His daughter, Floresse Trinidad, confirmed the news to GMA News Online. “Yes, we are very sad to share the news of his passing last night, July 13, 2024,” Floresse said via SMS. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.
Manolo “Chino” Trinidad, born on July 23, 1967, was renowned for his contributions to sports broadcasting and journalism in the Philippines. He began his career in the industry with the Sports Ngayon segment on Balitang Bayan Numero Uno from 1991 to 1998 on DZRH. Trinidad later joined Vintage Television as a sideline reporter from 1993 to 1995, eventually becoming a play-by-play commentator for basketball and boxing events, including the popular “Blow-by-Blow” series.
One of Trinidad’s most memorable moments in sports broadcasting was his commentary during the 1999 PBA All-Filipino Cup quarterfinals, where Barangay Ginebra achieved a dramatic upset against Mobiline Phone Pals. He also worked as a sports reporter for GMA News, where he continued to build his reputation as a knowledgeable and passionate sports journalist.
In 2000, Trinidad took on the role of commissioner for the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), succeeding Yeng Guiao. He served in this capacity until 2010, during which time he was instrumental in promoting and developing the league. He was also a founding member of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP), advocating for the rights and recognition of the SBP as the country’s official basketball federation.
Throughout his career, Trinidad held various positions, including being a candidate for UAAP Basketball Commissioner in 2014 and Chairman of the Games and Amusement Board (GAB). He was later appointed as a consultant for the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup and, in May 2024, became the commissioner of the Philippines’ first professional pool league, the Sharks Billiards Association.
After leaving GMA, Trinidad focused on his cable channel, Pilipinas HD, which he founded to further promote Filipino sports. In 2014, he spearheaded “Pagpupugay,” a tribute to Filipino sports heroes, which earned a minor citation from the PSA Annual Awards in 2015.
Trinidad was also known for his outspoken views on sports administration. In 2023, he publicly criticized Chot Reyes and the SBP for their handling of the national basketball team during the FIBA World Cup, highlighting his dedication to improving Philippine sports.
Chino Trinidad’s passing marks the end of an era in Philippine sports journalism. His contributions to the field, from his early days as a broadcaster to his later roles in sports administration, have left an indelible mark on the industry. He will be remembered for his passion, commitment, and unwavering support for Filipino athletes and sports.
