As two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo basks in the glory of his historic achievement, the spotlight has also begun to shift toward key members of his coaching team. Carlos made history as the first Filipino to win two Olympic gold medals in a single edition of the Games, triumphing in both the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor and Vault events.
Since his stunning victory, Carlos has been rewarded with an outpouring of support from both the government and private sectors. He has received cash prizes, residences, and even a lifetime supply of food. However, the accolades are not reserved for the gymnast alone. Key figures from his support team, such as his coach Allen Aldrin Castañeda, have also been recognized.
Aldrin, who rejoined Carlos’ coaching team last year after the gymnast’s split from Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya, has been instrumental in guiding Carlos to his victories. In recognition of his contributions, Aldrin will receive P10 million in cash incentives as mandated by Republic Act 10699, which outlines benefits and incentives for national athletes and their coaches.
Another important figure in Carlos’ success is his sports therapist, Lyn Hazel Calawod, who has garnered attention since the Paris Olympics. Hazel, a Biomechanics specialist, plays a crucial role in studying how training and competitions affect Carlos’ physical performance and ensuring his body is in peak condition. An Occupational Therapy graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman, Hazel has been with Carlos since the 31st Southeast Asian Games in 2022.
Hazel’s background is impressive, with credentials from institutions such as the Australian Physiotherapy Association and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is also the founder of NeuroBalance Therapy, which offers specialized therapy services to a wide range of clients, including athletes and persons with disabilities.
Despite their professional success, some rumors have circulated about a rift between Hazel and Carlos’ girlfriend, Chloe San Jose. However, Chloe quickly dispelled the speculation, addressing it head-on with a Facebook comment: “Wag kayong issue, kung ano ano na lang talaga no. Me and coach Lyn Hazel (loafie) are good good friends.”
Even as rumors persisted, such as the post by Xian Gaza suggesting jealousy from Chloe, both Carlos and his team remain focused on their success and camaraderie.
