Director Jose Javier Reyes Calls Angelica Yulo a “Drama Queen Mother”

Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chairman and CEO, Derek Jose “Joey” Javier Reyes, issued a bold statement regarding Angelica Yulo, the mother of Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo. He called her a “drama queen mother” and urged the media to ignore their family issues so as not to overshadow Carlos’s achievements.

Jose Javier Reyes on Angelica Yulo

Angelica Yulo recently drew attention due to her social media posts that seemingly undermined her son’s successful campaign at the Paris Olympics. In these posts, Angelica appeared to divert attention from Carlos’s triumphs to personal matters.

Following this, Angelica gave an interview to Bombo Radyo Philippines, where she expressed her disapproval of her son’s girlfriend, content creator Chloe San Jose. This led to increased media interest in Carlos Yulo’s personal life rather than his athletic accomplishments.

According to Reyes, such media coverage casts a shadow over the honor Carlos has brought to the country. “My dear colleagues in media: He just lifted the spirit of the nation by winning two Olympic gold medals. The people are overwhelmed with pride and joy. So please don’t give media space to a drama queen mother who wants to tarnish the moment of glory of her own son regardless of personal reason,” Reyes said.

The FDCP chairman also called for stories aimed at highlighting Angelica’s perspective to be collectively ignored. In his view, such stories do not contribute to celebrating Carlos Yulo’s success and instead, amplify unnecessary issues to the public.

In the wake of Reyes’s statements, Angelica Yulo’s camp has remained silent. Carlos Yulo’s camp has also refrained from commenting on the matter. However, Reyes wants to emphasize to the public that Carlos’s success should not be overshadowed by personal issues and controversies.

Carlos Yulo’s achievements are a tremendous inspiration for the entire nation. Despite the issues facing his family, Filipinos continue to take pride in his accomplishments in gymnastics.
