DOJ Drops Charges Against Gretchen Barretto; Claudine Reacts

The saga surrounding the disappearance of ‘sabungeros’ (cockfight enthusiasts) from 2021 to 2022 took a significant turn this week, as the Department of Justice (DOJ) released its recommendation to file charges against several individuals. Amidst the high-profile list, actress Claudine Barretto shared a moment of profound relief and celebration after her elder sister, Gretchen Barretto, was explicitly not included among those to be indicted.

On Tuesday, December 9, the DOJ published a press statement outlining the findings of its panel of prosecutors. The panel found sufficient “prima facie evidence” to file cases of Kidnapping with Homicide and Kidnapping with Serious Illegal Detention against businessman Atong Ang and over 20 other personalities. Ang, a known associate of Gretchen, tops the list of respondents who face potential indictment for 10 counts of Kidnapping with Homicide.

Crucially, the DOJ announcement also addressed other respondents, stating that complaints against them were dismissed for lack of merit, though without prejudice to refiling should new evidence emerge. Gretchen Barretto’s name was absent from the final list of individuals recommended for prosecution.

This decision follows Gretchen’s proactive appearance at the DOJ with her legal counsel, Atty. Alma Mallonga, to present evidence refuting the allegations. It is recalled that Gretchen was one of the names mentioned by a witness, Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, who allegedly implicated her in the kidnapping and murder plot.

Atty. Mallonga stated the DOJ’s release, confirming their client’s exoneration. “Thankfully, the Department of Justice agreed, ruling that the accusations were based on speculation and uncorroborated, and thus dismissed the complaint against her for lack of merit,” Mallonga stated.

Optimum Star Claudine Barretto wasted no time in expressing her joy. She shared an online article detailing the dismissal of the complaint against her sister on her social media.

The truth is out! God is on our side always! Your strength amazes me. I will celebrate you from a far while i work and in my prayers. To god to be glory!” read Claudine’s caption.

The celebratory post marks a personal triumph for the Barretto family, highlighting their unity and relief that Gretchen has been cleared by the justice department. While the legal battle is just beginning for those indicted, for Gretchen Barretto and her sister Claudine, the dismissal represents a significant and welcome closure to a challenging chapter.
