James Lee Williams, widely celebrated as drag artist The Vivienne, has died at the age of 32, as confirmed by their public relations representative on Sunday. The news was shared by Simon Jones, who posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, highlighting Williams’ warmth, talent, and cherished status among family and fans.
“It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend,” Jones wrote. He also requested privacy for Williams’ grieving family.
Born in North Wales, Williams first gained prominence in 2015 as the UK drag ambassador for the U.S. series RuPaul’s Drag Race. They solidified their place in drag history by winning the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, captivating audiences with a memorable lip-sync to Wham!’s I’m Your Man.
Williams continued to shine on stage and screen, finishing third in the UK’s Dancing on Ice in 2023. Their acting credits included roles in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie and Emmerdale. Most recently, Williams portrayed the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz musical revival.
Social media was flooded with tributes following the announcement of their passing. RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage described Williams as a “beacon” of laughter and talent, while UK drag star Tia Kofi called them “a mentor, an inspiration, and a friend.”
Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton expressed heartbreak, calling Williams “a real joy to be around,” and ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly described them as “whip-smart, funny, and generous.”
In 2020, Williams starred in BBC Three’s The Vivienne Takes on Hollywood, showcasing their creativity and versatility. The series featured collaborations with Broadway and comedy stars as Williams explored their first foray into music video production.
Williams was also a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using their platform to highlight the community’s challenges. In 2022, they faced and overcame a homophobic hate crime, demonstrating resilience and strength.
Known for their humor and charm, Williams once described their drag persona as “a Scouse wife who moved to LA, spent all her money, and had to return to Liverpool.” Their comedic prowess, combined with vocal impersonations of figures like Donald Trump and Cilla Black, won them widespread admiration.
