In a strong condemnation, Ice Seguerra criticized the arrest of one of their fellow LGBTQIA+ community members, Pura Luka Vega, a well-known drag artist. According to Seguerra, this is just proof of how outdated and antiquated the laws in the Philippines are.
On their Facebook page last Thursday, October 5, Seguerra expressed their concern about the lack of laws aimed at protecting their community from unfair treatment due to religious beliefs.
“This is a clear testament to how outdated the laws in the Philippines are,” Seguerra said while displaying a photo of Pura Luka’s mug shot. “It’s easy to file a case against someone who ‘offends’ the religious beliefs of the majority, but despite this, LGBTQIA+ members still do not have rights in the eyes of the law, and they are often stripped of their jobs, harmed, and killed, often as a result of religion.”
Seguerra also added how members of the LGBTQIA+ community can be quickly prosecuted when they violate the beliefs of others, but the same doesn’t happen when they themselves are oppressed.
In Seguerra’s statements, their need for a balanced approach to passing laws in the country is evident. They listed the challenges their community faces and the need for a more just system.
Overall, Ice Seguerra demonstrates their concern for LGBTQIA+ community members and their dream of equal rights under the law.
