Filipino singer Julie Anne San Jose has issued an official apology following controversy surrounding her performance at a church concert in Occidental Mindoro. The event, titled “Heavenly Harmony in Concert: Harana para kay Maria,” took place at the Nuestra Señora Del Pilar Shrine in Mamburao. San Jose performed ABBA’s hit song “Dancing Queen” in front of the church altar, which sparked backlash from some members of the public.
In her official Facebook post, San Jose expressed regret for any offense caused by her performance. She wrote, “I am offering my apologies. Even though my only intentions were to share joy and to give support to the church through the benefit concert, many have felt offended about the incident I was in and by my performance which caused distress. I truly, sincerely apologize.”
She further acknowledged that the incident was a learning experience, assuring her followers that such an occurrence would not happen again. “This is a lesson learned and it is assured that it will not be repeated. I am not perfect but please know that I have strong beliefs, and my faith is unbreakable and cannot be shaken,” she added.
The benefit concert, intended to raise funds for the church’s renovation, featured various songs, including Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” and Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory.” While the concert’s goal was appreciated, many believed that certain songs, particularly “Dancing Queen,” were not appropriate for a sacred space. Critics argued that a church should not host performances of secular music, especially near the altar, which is a revered area for worship.
The incident has divided public opinion, with some defending San Jose and emphasizing the charitable nature of the concert. Supporters pointed out that she was simply performing a setlist and that responsibility should fall on the organizers for song selection.
As of now, neither the Nuestra Señora Del Pilar Shrine nor the concert organizers have released an official statement on the matter. However, San Jose’s heartfelt apology reflects her willingness to address the controversy and move forward with compassion.
