Filipino-American actress Liza Soberano has officially confirmed that she and her longtime partner, Enrique Gil, ended their relationship nearly three years ago, putting an end to years of public speculation.
The revelation came during her guest appearance on the “Can I Come In?” podcast on Thursday, August 14, where she opened up to filmmaker Sarah Bahbah about the real status of her relationship with Gil.
“I’ve been itching to tell people this because I haven’t been very truthful. Quen hasn’t been very truthful. Quen and I broke up,” Soberano said. “We’ve been broken up for almost three years now. The reason why we didn’t say anything before is because Enrique asked me not to at first.”
Soberano explained that both she and Gil initially avoided announcing their split because they did not want to accept it themselves. She admitted that her “people pleaser” tendencies played a role, fearing that the breakup might negatively affect her career and public image.
The Forevermore star shared that she had once imagined marrying Gil, but over time, they realized they “weren’t a match anymore.” Despite this, she described the separation as “a beautiful breakup,” emphasizing that it was filled with love and mutual respect.
“When I broke up with him, it was so hard because I love him. I still love him as a person. I carry guilt for not being the one to hold on, but I needed to find myself and grow,” she said, clarifying that their split was not due to wrongdoing on either side.
Soberano reflected fondly on their beginnings, revealing that she and Gil developed feelings before they were officially paired as a love team. She recounted that Gil had specifically requested to work with her, and their closeness grew while filming the 2013 movie “She’s the One.”
She also acknowledged that their onscreen partnership served as a “safety net” that helped her overcome personal struggles and financial hardships. “I gained a lifelong best friend. My first love. The love team was also my armor,” she said.
