MTRCB Chairperson Lala Sotto Denies Influence in Filing Criminal Case Against Vice Ganda and Ion Perez by Social Media Broadcasters

In the wake of speculations that MTRCB Chair Lala Sotto had allegedly influenced the actions of the group’s so-called social media broadcasters (KSMBPI), the organization filed a case against Vice Ganda and Ion Perez. Chair Sotto has since clarified that the said meeting was intended to foster cooperation and express support for the MTRCB’s efforts in regulating film and TV broadcasts, particularly in light of the agency’s limited resources as a relatively small body. She emphasized that their visit was not intended to manipulate any legal actions against anyone.

MTRCB Meeting With Social Media Broadcasters

“The purpose of this visit was to demonstrate their endorsement of our efforts in overseeing film and TV broadcasts, recognizing the MTRCB’s limited resources as a small agency. Consequently, the MTRCB appreciates their expressed support for ensuring responsible and high-quality content in the entertainment industry, in line with our mandates under PD 1986,” Chair Sotto stated.

The news came to light after a photo of Chair Sotto with members of KSMBPI, who initiated the legal action against Vice Ganda and Ion Perez, was posted online. The case revolves around alleged violations of the Revised Penal Code in connection with cybercrime legislation. This legal action stems from a controversial incident on their noontime show involving the consumption of cake icing.

Vice Ganda Ion Perez

As of now, there has been no official suspension implemented. The MTRCB has given Vice Ganda and Ion Perez an opportunity to explain their side through a motion. The show’s representatives assert that they did not violate any laws or regulations. Earlier, the MTRCB announced Chair Lala Sotto’s decision to inhibit from voting on the suspension matter.

The incident highlights the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the responsibility of the entertainment industry to adhere to regulatory guidelines. As the legal proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how this case will shape the landscape of media content regulation in the Philippines.
