The Bagong Pilipinas is a campaign jingle of President Ferdinand Marcos and Vice President Sarah Duterte during the previous election, where they secured victory. Rapper Andrew Espiritu aka Andrew E wrote and performed it. It’s worth noting that the presidential election last year was heated, with President-elect Bongbong Marcos facing off against former Vice President Leni Robredo, Vice President Sarah Duterte, and their opponent Senator Francis Pangilinan.
Many were displeased with the election results, and there were rumors of fraud due to the slow internet in the Philippines, making it difficult to transmit results from various places to the main server. Nevertheless, the results were finalized, and Bongbong Marcos and Sarah Duterte were elected as president and vice president.
One of the key promises President Marcos made during the campaign was the low price of rice, which he claimed could be as low as 20 pesos per kilo. However, currently, citizens are complaining about the prices of essential goods, starting from onions, sugar, gasoline, and the most talked-about issue: the price of rice, especially since the president himself is now serving as the Department of Agriculture secretary.
In recent times, many people have been posting on various social media platforms due to the high price of rice, reaching or even exceeding 60 pesos per kilo in different parts of the Philippines. Some are blaming and challenging the 31 million voters who supported Marcos, while others are questioning President Bongbong’s credibility as a Department of Agriculture secretary. However, one post that’s particularly attention-grabbing features a child singing a modified version of the campaign jingle: “Bagong Pilipinas Bagong Mukha, Ang Presyo sng Bugas 1,400 na ang tunga”. In the Bisaya language, “Tunga” means half indicating that the price of rice has reached 1,400 pesos for a half sack of rice. The kid is singing while chopping wood and preparing to cook rice.
