Pokwang, the popular Filipino comedienne, found herself in hot water after a recent joke she made on social media. The joke, which poked fun at the partner of an athlete, did not sit well with many netizens who perceived it as offensive.
In her now-deleted post, Pokwang quipped, “Ano ang tawag sa jowa ng athlete na laging nakasunod? Ano? Edi Athlete’s foot! Ngee.. ache ache…” While Pokwang intended it as light-hearted humor, it didn’t take long for the post to receive negative reactions from netizens.
Many online users believed the joke was aimed at Filipino Olympic gymnast Carlos Yulo and his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose. Although Pokwang did not directly mention any names, netizens speculated that the reference to an athlete’s partner may have been directed at the couple, especially given the recent buzz around their relationship.
The controversy surrounding Yulo and San Jose’s relationship has been a topic of discussion in recent weeks, especially after Yulo’s mother publicly expressed concerns about their relationship. Yulo’s mother had previously hinted that San Jose might have played a role in their family issues. However, Carlos Yulo himself debunked these claims, clarifying that Chloe was not to blame for any family tensions.
Despite Yulo’s clarification, the sensitive nature of the topic made Pokwang’s joke even more contentious for netizens. Comments on her post ranged from disappointment to frustration, with some calling it insensitive given the circumstances.
“Parang di sya nabulag sa pag-ibig,” said one commenter. “Eh yung naghahabol sa jowang palamunin na inayawan kana ano pong tawag🙄.”
Others, however, defended the comedienne, “e d jowang palamunin pa rin tawag doon at tama lang na binasura ni pokwang .,” one user remarked.
As the backlash grew, Pokwang opted to take down the post and has not issued any further statements regarding the incident. Whether or not the joke was directed at Yulo and San Jose, it has certainly sparked a conversation about boundaries in humor, especially when it comes to public figures.
