Quake in Zamboanga Peninsula.
A magnitude 6 earthquake hit Zamboanga Peninsula before the dawn on Thursday leaving least three reported injured people in the occurrence.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the magnitude 6 earthquake hit off 19 kilometers northwest of Baliguian, Zamboanga Del Norte at 2:21 am.
Phivolcs declared Zamboanga City to have experienced the Intensity VI which is very strong for a record.
Meanwhile, here are the following intensities felt in the following areas.
Intensity VI (very strong) – Zamboanga City; Intensity V (strong) – Baliguian and Siocon, Zamboanga Del Norte; Intensity IV (moderately strong) – Gutalac, Ipil, Labason and Sibuco,Zamboanga Del Norte; Titay, Zamboanga; Sibugay; Isabela City, Basilan; Pagadian City. Intensity III (weak) – Salug and Liloy, Zamboanga Del Norte. Intensity II (slightly felt) – Dipolog City; Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental; Dapitan City; Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. Intensity I (slightly perceptible) – Lazi, Siquijor
Injured in the occurrence of the quake were Arsena Natividad, 56, her son Raymond Natividad, 23, and her granddaughter Juliana, 13 who were reported sleeping when the quake hit.
According to the report, the victims were rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
Following the occurrence of the earthquake, guests at nearby hotels rushed of the establishments for aftershocks and that coastal areas were monitored by officials for possible tidal waves.
According to Phivolcs, the intensity VI involves people losing their balance, motorists feel like driving in flat tires.
They added that during the said intensity, heavy objects and furniture would move or may be shifted.
The quake in the Peninsula was reported to hit at a depth of 16 kilometers and was tectonic in nature.
Phivolcs reminded the public not to panic during earthquake while they slowly look for the exit and safer place which is away from buildings and posts.
