It is sad to report that veteran cinematographer Romeo “Romy” Vitug passed away at the age of 86, according to his family’s confirmation on Friday. His son VJ specified that Vitug succumbed to blood cancer at the City of Imus Doctors Hospital on Thursday.
Vitug is renowned for his excellent work in the field of cinematography in various local films and TV series, including “Mga Bilanggong Birhen” (1977), “Atsay” (1978), “Kapag Langit ang Humatol” (1990), “Sana Maulit Muli” (1995), and “Hihintayin Kita sa Langit” (1991). He collaborated with industry giants, from Lino Brocka and Mario O’Hara to Laurice Guillen and Olivia Lamasan.
Vitug received a lifetime achievement award at the Cinemanila International Filmfest in 2000 and at the Gawad Urian in 2016. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
The passing of Romy Vitug has left a significant void in the film and television industry. His contributions to cinematography have inspired the succeeding generations of filmmakers and cinematographers.
Despite Romy Vitug’s departure, the memory of his works and his influence on the art industry will endure. His legacy will continue to live on in each piece of art he created and in the hearts of those who love the art of cinematography.
