Estrada emphasized Romero’s lasting impact on the entertainment industry, stating that her work extended beyond acting, influencing generations of Filipino artists. “The Senate, along with the entire Filipino nation, mourns the loss of a cinematic legend whose legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come,” Estrada said.

Known for her beauty, sophistication, and exceptional acting skills, Romero built an illustrious career spanning decades. She was affectionately called the “First Lady of Philippine Cinema” due to her prominence as a leading lady alongside many major actors of her time. Estrada noted that his father, former President Joseph Estrada, was fortunate to have starred alongside Romero in the film Patria Adorada, which won Best Picture at the 4th Manila Film Festival in 1969.

Romero’s journey in Philippine cinema began humbly in 1949 when she played an extra in Ang Bahay sa Lumang Gulod. However, her talent and charm quickly propelled her to stardom. In 1954, she earned her breakthrough role in the romantic comedy Dalagang Ilocana, a performance that won her the first FAMAS Best Actress Award at just 21 years old. This marked the beginning of an illustrious career where she appeared in over 250 films and television shows.

Beyond her work on screen, Romero was a beloved figure admired for her grace and professionalism. She remained an active and respected presence in the entertainment industry well into her later years, serving as a mentor and role model for younger generations of actors.

Estrada’s resolution seeks to officially recognize Romero’s enduring legacy in Philippine cinema and pay tribute to her contributions to the country’s rich cultural heritage. “Her unparalleled dedication and passion for her craft have left an indelible mark on the industry, and she will forever be remembered as one of the finest actresses in Philippine history,” Estrada said.

As the nation mourns the loss of a true cinematic legend, Gloria Romero’s legacy will continue to live on through the countless films and performances that shaped the golden era of Philippine cinema.
