The ‘No Work, No Pay’ Issue is Separate from the Suspension of ‘It’s Showtime,’ According to MTRCB

Last Sunday, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) conveyed that their decision to temporarily suspend the noontime show “It’s Showtime” is not connected to issues regarding the salary of their workers that could result from their order.

This comes after Senator Bong Revilla expressed concern for the “no work, no pay” employees of the said show, where they only receive compensation whenever there is a show, and they don’t get paid if there is no show. He argued that Vice Ganda and Ion Perez should not be implicated in the show’s suspension. The senator hopes that the leadership of ABS-CBN and GMA will submit an appeal to President Marcos and is also hopeful that, due to humanitarian considerations, the show will continue without a suspension.

“The suspension, in fact, highlights deeper and more intricate issues of contractualization within the entertainment industry. This issue requires sincere attention from the producers,” as stated by the MTRCB, emphasizing that these two issues are “distinct matters.”

In this statement, the MTRCB clarifies its decision to suspend the program, stating that it is not directly related to wage discussions for their workers. Instead, this statement underscores the deeper problem of contractualization in the entertainment industry, which requires a solution and recognition from the production companies.

It is only fitting for everyone to pay attention to the issue of contractualization in the entertainment industry to uphold the rights and justice of workers in the showbiz field.
