Traditional games are games that can play outdoors and indoors. These games are commonly played by children back in the old days in the Philippines.

Tumbang Preso

Do you have an empty can and a pair of slippers? You can actually play this game on the road using cans and slippers. Just make sure that you’re playing on a road where there are few to no vehicles passing by.

Tagu-taguan

This is the Philippines’ version of “Hide and Seek”. What makes this game differ from the usual game is that you can play this at any time of the day. Yet, the best time to play this game is during sunset or nighttime because it challenges the “it” (taya) to find the other players. At some point, you, as an “it“, may think that they’re at their homes while you’re still finding them.

Luksong Baka & Luksong Tinik

These games have similar rules — once they failed to jump over, the game is over. The only difference is that Luksong Baka (jump over a cow) involves jumping over the “it“‘s back (as if the “it” represents a cow”) while Luksong Tinik (jump over the thorns) involves jumping over stacks of hands and feet of two persons as bases (as if those hands and feet represent thorns).

Langit Lupa

This game has its objectives — to chase other players to become the new “it“. How to play this game? First, a “chant” must be sung first. The moment that he (or she) is the only one person who left and never gets pointed, he (or she) is the “it“. an unwritten rule is followed in order to avoid overstaying on higher objects and it gives the “it” a chance to tag players. Thus, the “it” can do a countdown from 5 to 1 on players who are on the higher ground. During the countdown, the other player should get down and outrun the “it” in order not to get tagged or become the next “it“.

Piko

Piko is a game wherein the players draw big box-like shapes on the floor to hop on and around using only a single foot. Players have their own “pamato” (a flat piece of stone) that placed on one of those boxes. The owner of that “pamato” cannot step on that box where he (or she) placed. After hopping around, he (or she) moves his (or her) “pamato” to the next box until his (or her) “pamato” reaches the topmost box. The first one to reach the topmost box wins the game.

Patintero

Patintero is one of the most popular traditional games ever played. It consists of two teams – the attacking team and the defense team. The defense team must guard their area by occupying the lines and moving them without allowing participants from the attacking team from entering. The moment that one of its members gets tagged, the attacking team will become the defense team and vice versa. For the attacking team, they can earn a point if at least one team member can move around the whole guarded area and go back to the starting point without getting tagged.

Sipa and Sepak Takraw

Sipa is one of the traditional games with the use of an object that is made with a washer, colorful threads, and strings. The sipa is usually thrown up in the air and the player must maintain it in the air just by kicking it. Despite that this game is popular, according to Rappler, “from being the “national sport,” sipa is now more commonly described as the “Philippines’ favorite traditional native sport.” Sepak Takraw, on the other hand, is similar to Sipa, yet it uses a woven wooden ball.

These are some of the most common games that gives nostalgia from the kids of the past. If the kids of today want to play these games, then they must ask their elder siblings or even on their parents.
