VinCentiments, led by director Darryl Yap, has released the trailer for its upcoming film, The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma, set to premiere in theaters on February 5, 2025. The film marks the 40th anniversary of Pepsi Paloma’s death, aiming to explore her life and the controversies that defined her career.
The previous trailer of the said movie immediately stirred controversy for its explicit mention of comedian and TV host Vic Sotto in connection with the alleged rape case involving Paloma during the 1980s. Commentator Cristy Fermin criticized the trailer as “clickbait,” claiming it was designed to generate interest. Despite the backlash, the trailer garnered millions of views after being shared on social media platforms.
In response, Sotto filed 19 counts of cyber libel against Yap on January 9, 2025, at the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court. His legal counsel, Atty. Enrique Dela Cruz stated that the lawsuit stemmed from defamatory content in the trailer, which allegedly distorted facts.
Sotto clarified that his legal action was not a personal vendetta but a stand against the irresponsible use of social media. He stressed that the filmmakers did not consult him or seek consent to use his name, warning of the potential damage to his reputation.
Defending the project, Yap asserted that the film and its promotional materials are based on documented events. He encouraged the public to watch the movie in full to understand the context, emphasizing that the film seeks to tell Paloma’s story rather than target specific individuals.
The Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 205 granted Sotto’s petition for a writ of habeas data, temporarily halting the film’s promotional activities. The court also ordered the removal of existing materials online, with a summary hearing set for January 15, 2025.
The film features Rhed Bustamante as Pepsi Paloma, Gina Alajar as Charito Solis, and Mon Confiado as Rey Dela Cruz, Paloma’s talent manager. While some commend Yap for tackling a sensitive and controversial topic, critics argue that the film may cause unnecessary distress to Paloma’s family and raises ethical concerns about revisiting tragic real-life events.
As its release approaches, The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma continues to spark heated debate, questioning the balance between artistic freedom and ethical responsibility in portraying historical controversies.
