To give a boost to the panda race, breeding programs are really of big help. It requires collaboration from the different wildlife refuges around the world who are housing captivated wild pandas. The unsatisfying feeling the bears got in mating or the lack of knowledge about it triggered the scientists to find solution to the issue.

To honor Nixon’s 1972 visit to China, two giant pandas of opposite sex named Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing were given to the National Zoo. They went through ten unsuccessful years of mating before they finally learned the matter and were able to produce five cubs. Unfortunately, none of the five survived or even just reached adulthood.

Time really matters for pandas when it comes to mating. A female is heat only for 12-25 days in the spring. Heat periods only happens once the said season but the bear is only receptive to the reproduction process for two-seven of the 12-25 days of heat. In fact, there are 24-36 hours of fertile period for them.

None can guarantee a pregnancy for these bears – even artificial insemination or the traditional mating. The process is complicated. Pandas too might go through embryonic diapause, a condition in which the embryo is fertilized but not yet implanted in the walls of the uterus. Thus, growth will be hindered until it is implanted.

Now is the dark age for pandas. There were just around 1600 bears in the wild in 2004 and 300 in zoos around the world are being held.
